Apple iPhone 7: Final deign, Leaks, rumour and Features

Enjoying the feel of that sparkly new rose gold iPhone 6S in your hand, and the joy of 3D Touch? We don’t want to spoil that love affair, but Apple’s already working on the iPhone 7 — and rumors about it are beginning to heat up.

Here’s what we think we know about Apple’s next major smartphone release so far.

Following leaks in April, MobiPicker has published photos of what it claims is a new iPhone 7 home button and it is the biggest redesign since Touch ID. In short: it’s no longer a button.

Instead Apple has turned it into a touch sensitive surface. As MobiPicker explains:

“Our source tells us that this button is perfectly in level with the rest of the bezel and cannot be pressed in. The button is touch-sensitive and users will have to perform tapping actions for various functions, like tap and hold for Siri, double tap to see the running apps, etc.”

In March Apple received a patent for a “bulk amorphous alloy pressure sensor”. Basically this is a touch sensitive surface and even Apple’s submitted sketches (one below) show it being used like a home button.

MacRumors says the once-unreliable rumours are now plausible in the grand scheme of things. It is strongly suggested that Apple will remove the headphone jack on the iPhone 7, a move that, when combined with a new home button, should lead to a device with strong water resistance. A flush home button is now "not a rumor that seems entirely out of the question", it says.

However, continues the site, previous sources with highly reliable track records – such as KGI analyst Ming Chi-Kuo – have said this year's iPhone won't introduce many new features ahead of a radical overhaul in 2017. A force-sensitive home button would be a major change so the word of more sources is needed to resolve some of the conflicting rumours.
